PE
The Friary school outline the role Physical Education can play in promoting numeracy: PE lessons can help to develop and support pupils’ numeracy skills, for example, athletic activities require measurement of height, distance and time, while ideas of counting, time, symmetry, movement, position and direction are used extensively in music, dance, gymnastics and ball games. How the elements of numeracy might apply to PE:
Lesson Ideas
All sports have different measurements such as speed, distance, height, time and many more. Without these we won't be able to tell apart who is a faster athelete than the other and so there will be no champion for Australia.
Speed:
Many different sports use speed to find out the winner.
*Speed of a car in km/per hour for motor racing
*Swimming.
*How fast are you running?
*The speed of the ball when serving in tennis.
Distance:
Distance is how far from one certain point to the other.
Distance is used for things like how long do I have to run in the cross country, or in football for how far do I have to kick a ball to get a 40/20 kick.
Height:
'Height' means how long something is vertically.
It is used in many sports and fun activities. the following are examples of sports where height is used.
*High jump *Bungee jumping (I hope you measure this one right or your going to have a big headache)
*Pole Vault *Parachuting
Time:
Time plays an important role in P.E. It tells us how long is needed to complete something e.g. A certain task.
*How many times does your heart beat in a minute?
*Running
*Time taken to complete a race course
*Swimming
*Athletes
Time and therefore mathematics are very important in sports, it tells us how to play and who is the winner.
PE | Lesson Ideas
This wiki contains ideas to help you develop numeracy in your lessons and across the school. Some of the ideas presented are taken from some excellent numeracy across the curriculum documents produced by Deptford Green School, the Friary School, Leicestershire Numeracy team, All Saints CCFL School, and the Kent Advisory Service (curriculum support in mathematics) amongst others. Please take the time to visit the Resources page to take a look at these documents and the associated weblinks in the Useful Links page (2 really useful ones are the Maths Zone and Suffolk Maths and a good blog post from @numberloving here). Other ideas are developed by teachers/educators who have contributed directly or indirectly to this wiki.
